Compare/Contrast Editorial

Choose one of the areas below and analyze how it is portrayed similarly and differently in

the book versus the movie.  Questions below are to prompt students to create their compare/contrast editorial.  They are to use the questions below to get them started and take their compare/contrast further.
    1. Characters - How were the characters same/different from the book to the movie?  Were certain characters left out or added?  Why do you think characterization changes were made from the book to the movie?  How do you feel about those changes?  Did these changes to characterization alter the plot?  Do you think it was easier for Suzanne Collins to write about the characters for us to see in our imagination or for the director and movie staff to create the characters for us to see on the the screen?  Explain.
    2. Setting - How was the setting same/different from the book to the movie?  Were certain scenes, districts, etc. described differently in the book than they were projected on the big screen?  If there were areas of the setting that didn’t live up to the book’s descriptions, why do you think that was?  Did you like the book or movie’s description/portrayal of the different settings?  Why?  Do you think it’s easier for Suzanne Collins to create the setting of the book for us to imagine in our heads or for the director and movie staff to create the setting for us to see with our own eyes?  Explain.
    3. Plot - What was same/different as far as the book’s plot compared to the movie’s plot?  What areas of the book/movie flowed the same?  Which areas of the book/movie flowed differently?  Which did you like better and why? Since it’s impossible to put all areas of the plot in the movie from the book, do you think that the director chose the right mix to retell Suzanne Collins’ story, or did he leave out crucial rising/falling actions?  If you had not read the book, would it be difficult to follow the movie because of areas of plot changed or left out?  Explain.

  1. Plot
The things that were the same in the book and the movie were that Katniss and Peeta won the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteered for Prim, and pretty much everything except for the following things. When the tributes died, they didn’t show the hovercraft picking them up. When Rue died, they showed an uprising in District 11 that actually happens in the second book. Another thing that was different was that in the end, Katniss didn’t tell Petta that it was all an act. I liked the book better because it was more descriptive than the movie, even though the movie was really good. I think that the director chose the right mix to retell Suzanne Collins’ story. If I didn’t read the book, I don’t think it wouldn’t be difficult to follow the movie because of areas of plot changed or left out. In all the Hunger Games movie lived up to my expectations.

  2. The movie had a different corucopia than the book described it as a metal ball it did not look like a horn.

The book and the movie both showed them about to eat the poison berries and in the movie it tied the second book to the movie and beacuse they killed the gamemaker in the movie beacause it showed.

  3. I think all the characters are the same but some of the Tributes names are not given in the book whereas in the movie all the main tributes names are given. The changes were made because they wanted the movie to give more of a description of the characters.I think it was a positive change because i got a better idea of the characters. For the director to put a more in depth idea of a character.

  4. The setting in the movie and the book were different. The things that were the same were that they faked the love thing, the fire, the tracker jackers, that they won, and that the dogs attacked them. The things that were different were how Katniss got the arrows, how some of the people died, and that some of the parts were left out.

      A) Same- Gale and Peeta both have feelings for Katniss at the beginning of the movie and in the book. In both the movie and book Katniss substituted for Prim because she didn't want her sister to get hurt.

Difference- In the movie, Peeta had feelings for Katniss since they first met, but in the book Peeta had feelings for Katniss since the reaping. In the book Katniss and Peeta told each other that it was Haymitch that was making them act like they had feelings for each other. Another difference is that Katniss rolled Peeta into the water to clean him after he hid in the mouth in the book. Also, in the book, Katniss said she had feelings for Peeta but she couldn't get herself to stop thinking about Gale. In the movie when she got stung she was hallucinating her mom yelling at her to run but in the book she was imagining the trees talking to her.

I feel like even though they changed some stuff in the movie they both had a lot of detail. The movie was a little different from the book in some parts but it was still very good.

    2. The plot was basically the same as the book because both the movie and book had Katniss taking Prim's place as tribute, and both Katniss and Peeta won. All of the same things happened in the book and movie except for the uprising after Prim died in district 11, didn't get bread from district 11, had Katniss give Mockingjay to Prim and the mayor wasn't in movie. The director picked and chose the right scenes that were needed to make the movie interesting and mostly the same.

  5. plot
The book had a lot more details than the movie. One example is that Haymitch didn't give Peeta sleeping medicine in the movie but he did in the book. Another difference is that Peeta has an artificial leg in the book but not in the movie. One similarity is that wore crazy dresses. Another similarity is that they liked the showers. I think the director did a good put everything that was important in the movie. I think it follows the book good.

  6. There were some similarities in the movie compared to the book. For example, Katniss exploded the food. They also lived in a hole by the river. There were also differences between the movie and book. For example Thresh didn't throw Clove to kill her in the book. He hit her with a rock. Also, Thresh didn't get chased by Cato in the movie for killing Clove. Also, after Thresh saved Katniss they stopped and talked in the book. In the movie they didn't.

  7. Book: Katniss gives Peeta sleeping syrup.
    Katniss is given the pin.
Rue and Katniss come up with a plan.
Gale talks to Katniss when the door closes.
It talks about how Katniss and Gale met.

Movie: Gale says something when the door shuts.
It doesn't talk about Gale and Katniss.
Katniss doesn't give Peeta sleeping syrup.
Rue and Katniss don't have a plan.
    Katniss buys the pin.

it is confusing when the people get mad in the movie and when she remembers Peeta giving her the bread.

  8. Book: Peeta got a fake leg after the Hunger Games.
Movie: Peeta did not have a fake leg.

Book: Haymitch fell off the stage.
Movie: Haymitch wasn't on the stage.

Book: Peeta and Katniss put the berries in their mouth.
Movie: They cam close to it, but didn't put them in their mouth.

Book: Cinna actually asked the game makers if the pin was OK.
Movie: They snuck the pin anto her shirt.

I think it was easier for the director and the producer to make the characters because they were already made for them. Suzanne had to think for hours about every character in the book.

  9. Characters

In the movie, Katniss did not call out for Peeta when she heard there could be two winners. In the movie KAtniss yelled at Peeta after the interviews.

In the book Katniss called out for Peeta when she heard there could be two winners when she thought she was going to get killed because she gave away her position. In the book Katniss yelled at and hit Peeta with a vase.
